Hail Caledonia

We emerge
Like the troglodytes of old
And
Stare balefully
At the Light,
Eyes blinking against
His unbearable
Luminescence.
A guttural
Unearthly chant
Builds slowly
Reverberates,
Flows
Sweeps all before it
“TAPS AFF! TAPS AFF!”
We prepare our abeyances
Stripping own
Baring our very soles
We lie
Prostrate
Before Him
Anointing ourselves
We offer ourselves up
In sacrifice
Prepared to die
(Or at least burn a wee bit)
For our love of Him.
For three whole days
We bathe ourselves in his
Almightiness
Until
On the fourth
He departs
Replete in our adoration.
And we are
Resigned
Knowing He will one day
Return.
