not sleeping

Waiting

I lie there waiting
But he doesn’t come
I toss and turn in a pool of sweat
But still he doesn’t come

Is he concealed behind the curtains?
While I wait for him to come
Is he skulking below the bed?
While still I wait for him to come.

I punch the pillow in despair
Praying for him to come
I slip deep down beneath the duvet
Praying again for him to come.

A slither of early light appears
And still he hasn’t come
The first commuter leaves the street
And still he hasn’t come

Slowly my eyelids begin to droop
He’s come. At last, he’s come!
He holds me close in a warm embrace
Oh yes, he’s come, at last he’s come

As I drift towards that wonderous land
I whisper, “Please don’t go.”
It’s then I hear his wicked tone
“It’s time to rise you know.”
